O.C. (Officer of the Order of Canada); R.C.A. (Royal Academy of the Arts in Canada)
Marcel Barbeau was born in Montreal on February 18, 1925. Christian Marcel Barbeau died in 2016.
He studied under Paul-Émile Borduas at the École du Meuble in Montreal from 1945 until 1953 .He mingled with young intellectuals at Borduas’ personal art studio who later formed the Automatists Group. Barbeau exhibited in all the activities of the group between 1946 and 1955. He participated in the first two exhibitions – in April 1946 and February 1947 – and he later signed the "Global Refusal" manifesto in 1948. Since, he has never stopped questioning his acquired knowledge and experience always in search of new forms and modes of expression. His work evolved rapidly reflecting a Dionysian and Apollo like vision quoting Carole Gagnon of Marcel Barbeau in: ”Le Regard en fugue”. Charles Delloye also explains in the preface of this book “essentially Barbeau’s creative activity is a repetitive impulse to push the limit”.
Marcel Barbeau is an “artist explorer” according to poet Claude Gauvreau. Nomadic by curiosity of other worlds: Vancouver, Paris, New York, Southern California all were his territories at one point and now he has restored his deep roots in his native country. Since 1991, he spends his time between Quebec and France.
Marcel Barbeau has exhibited extensively in Canada, the United States, Europe and North Africa. He has participated in solo and group shows including major international exhibitions and in museum and university galleries. He created some public works including sculptures: Liberté, Liberté chérie (1987), Les Portes du regard, Montréal-Est (1990) and Fenêtre sur l'avenir (1992) at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He also painted a mural for Via Rail (Canada) called Laurentides. The fact that his works are in most Canadian public collections and in some important European and American collections confirms again the importance of his body of work. He received the Zack Purchase Award from the Royal Academy of the Arts in Canada (1963), the Lynch-Staunton scholarship from the Arts Council of Canada (1973), the Sculpture Prize from the McDonald’s Restaurants competition of Canada (1985), the Gold Medal in painting at the Second Game of the “Francophie” in Paris where he was representing Quebec (1994) and the 5th Prize in painting at the Florence Contemporary Art Biennale (2001). In 1993, he was received as a member at the Royal Academy of the Arts in Canada and in 1995, the General Governor of Canada honoured him with the title of “Officer of the Order of Canada” to acknowledge his contribution to Canadian art.
